Hello, ______. My name is ______ and I am a resident of _______. I am calling in support of the results of the People’s Referendum on August 15th. It’s very telling that almost 2,000 residents took the time to make their voices heard on these issues. Two-thirds of the participants voted to remove the Confederate monument and repeal 287g. We are asking you to take us seriously. Will you commit to voting on these issues at the next County Commissioners’ meeting?
If, yes: Thank you for taking this important step. Thank you for your time. Good-bye.
If, no: I am sorry to hear that. I strongly urge you to listen to your constituents.
Thank you for your time. Good-bye.

Dear ____________,
My name is ________ and I am a resident of ________. I am writing in support of the results of the People’s Referendum on August 15th. Nearly 2,000 residents voted, and of that number, over two-thirds of the votes support 1) removing the Confederate monument from outside the courthouse, and 2) repealing the 287g Warrant Service Officer Program in the Alamance Co Sheriff’s Office. Those voting represented all corners of the county, all ages, and all walks of life. We are your constituents and duty to your office requires that you listen to us.
It is no accident that the Confederate monument sits on the same site where Wyatt Outlaw was lynched by the KKK, and that the historical context of Alamance County’s willing participation in the Confederate War has been unjustly conflated (the vote to remain in the Union 1,114 versus 254 to succeed, according to the Alamance County's own website). The fact that the statue stands before a symbol of justice exacerbates all injustices historically expressed towards BIPOC and continues to represent racism and encourage hatred and oppression of our friends and families in Alamance County. I ask you, Commissioner, respectfully, to call for a vote on removing the monument.
Our community considers the monument and 287g program together because they both degrade the safety and cohesion of our community. Sheriff Johnson enacted the 287g program without input from the community or from the County Commissioners. This is not a transparent process. It puts our community at risk by creating distrust between the community and law enforcement. As our elected representative, we ask you to work with Sheriff Johnson to repeal the 287g program.
People want to have a say in the decisions that shape the present and future of Alamance County. As an elected official and community leader, I urge you to listen to your constituents and act on these matters at the next County Commissioners’ meeting. Can I count on you to do so?
Thank you,
